Campus Martius is the place to go in downtown Detroit

The park is right in the center of downtown Detroit and Greektown (which include Astoria Pastry Shop) as well as most major restaurants and retail. Many times during say the summer concert series where they have featured artists perform throughout the day, I'd go across down the street for a delicious ice cream cone at Happy Cream, or even head to American Coney Island or Detroit's Breakfast Housefor a bite to eat. Then you could find a nice spot to enjoy the show.

You can sit down and see the tall buildings overlooking the park. I'm an architecture buff so this just adds to the feeling of relaxing in the park. As I said above, summer concerts and movies are featured all week. Weekdays will play small concerts during the day.

On Fridays during the day, you can also find artists in the park where the feature some of their work and allow you to buy it if you see something you like. During the weekends, you can find bigger concert performances as well as movie showings (good movies of course).

When I'm hungry for lunch or something of that nature, I usually head over to Au Bon Pain for a sandwich or maybe some desert. Hard Rock cafe is also right across the street so if you feel like taking a break from the show, head over there to get something to eat.

I love the concerts because it's a great scene to see people enjoying the show and actually enjoying being in downtown Detroit.

One thing I should also point out is that you will usually find guides around the park that can tell you about the history of the park and the city (the park was the origin for the street layout of Detroit) and other knowledgeable nuggets as well. Many time when coming from the Detroit Riverwalk, I also like to stop by Campus Martius Park as well.

Even when summer ends, the park is a great place to go. In the winter, half of the park turns into an ice skating rink. Check out my Detroit Event Calendar for a list of events during the summer

You can rent skates if you do not have any. If you're in Detroit during the winter, head down to Campus Martius Detroit and have some fun skating (or falling down attempting to skate) with many other people.
