Detroit Eastern Market...a great Saturday experience
Detroit Eastern Market is something that all Detroiters know about. On Saturdays, you can find tons of vendors selling fresh produce and tons of people crowding the area near downtown Detroit. You can find anything at this food market from fresh corn, peppers, and tomatoes all the way to fresh strawberries, oranges, and other fruits. It is literally packed on Saturdays with people looking for deals on the fresh produce. I go here constantly because the quality of the food is so good. It's not like going into a supermarket and buying your food, but it's more of an experience instead of "just grocery shopping".
First, even though it gets crowded, it's a nice atmosphere seeing and being around everyone. Also the interaction with the vendors gives it a more personal feel. You will always find them yelling out deals on their products. During the spring and summer, Detroit Eastern Market is also a hotspot for people looking to buy flowers. Anybody who lives in Detroit always considers going to eastern market to look for their flowers before anywhere else.
During the winter, you will find plenty of poinsettias. You can find just about all the colors that poinsettias come in. Also during Christmas, vendors are down there selling Christmas trees. Besides buying fresh food, you can also find places to buy food that satisfies your hunger right then and there. There are many good restaurants around and although you will have to venture just outside of eastern market, the Milano Bakery is a great place for lunch and desert.
During football season, Detroit sports fans come out in droves to tailgate in Eastern Market for the Lions games at Ford Field. So even if you are just in town for a short visit, make sure you come down to eastern market at least once and just venture around. This is one of my favorite markets to go to in the Detroit area. The best thing is its location and its atmosphere. You will truly enjoy it. Also a quick note. The new Dequindre Cut, will connect the market with the Detroit riverfront (close to the Detroit Riverwalk which will be a nice addition to the place) Find more photos of Eastern Market here.
