The Detroit Historical Museum

Detroit Historical Museum

The Detroit Historical Museum is a true gem in the city of Detroit. As it's name implies, the museum chronicles all of the important history in the city that helped shape the city into what it is today.

It has everything from Detroit's humble beginnings in 1701, to the auto industry (of course). Getting here is no problem. If you're in town for a visit, and you've rented a car, it's a straight shot down Woodward Ave. from downtown.

It's in the heart of the cultural district so even if you can't park close, you can walk through the other sites near the museum. I personally like parking a bit far away and walking, just because I like to experience the city that way (unless it's cold of course haha)

My first time visiting the museum was as a kid on a school field trip and seeing how it has evolved and changed from then to now is amazing. I still enjoy going there from time to time to see new exhibits as well as the old ones.

Exhibits

A staple of the museum is the Glancy Trains exhibit. As many as 11 toy trains can be in motion last once. Of course you won't be able to bring the kids out of this room once they're in there so I'm giving you a heads up. I was one of them so I know these things :).

If you can't keep up with all the trains moving, they even have tv monitors so you can see trains moving on the other side of the exhibit. The exhibit is huge and you could literally be staring at it for hours. Well maybe not for hours but you get the picture .

Another interesting thing about the museum is the underground street which is really a series of streets from the old days with stone roads along with old shops which you can go in and see. Called the old streets of Detroit, it's basically a replica of what the old Detroit used to look like and once you go through here, you will really feel as though you're back in that era.

Of course this is the Motor City and the assembly line replica in the museum is a popular thing in the museum. The assembly line was the main catalyst to helping the auto industry grow into what it is today, and you can see shows and presentations of the actually process happening.

After you've toured the museum, take a trip back up to the gift shop to pick up some interesting items for yourself or your family. There is something for everyone in there. Click here to visit the official website of the Detroit Historical Museum. for more info on new and current exhibits.
