The Detroit River

Many fun activities along the river

Belle Isle Conservatory

The Detroit River is a great compliment to the area and offers many activities such as boat races and even walleye fishing. Shipping and other things to see as well.

I'm a water person. I just love being around the water. Detroit is unique in its position that it has the river bordering it just to the south (the only place in the US where Canada is SOUTH of the border). You can get an excellent view of the downtown Detroit skyline from Belle Isle or across the river in Canada. You can also see some cool Great Lakes ships passing through if you time it right. In the past Detroit didn't take advantage of the beautiful riverfront it had but now the riverfront is shaping up to be a true gem in the city. There have been a few restaurants that have popped up in recent years and more are sure to come.

I must say that if you stay in the Detroit Marriott Renaissance hotel, please try to get a riverfront room. The view is spectacular. The river has many places dotted along it that you can check out such as Chene Park and many other things. During the summer, you can also find the annual boat race on the river and boat tours and cruises. Along places like Harbortown you can find marinas and great biking paths.

The Detroit River Walk

Of course my absolute favorite thing about having the river so close is that I can come by and walk down the Riverwalk. This is one of my favorite things to do in the summer time. You get plenty of time to reflect and think about things and you've got a great view while you're doing it. They are currently extending the riverwalk even further so it will be a great addition to the city. Click here for more info on the River Walk.

Belle Isle

Belle Isle sits right in the middle of the river. I mean how many people can say that their city has a beautiful island that they can go to at anytime right in their city?? Not very many ;). There is a lot to do on this little island. Fishing, biking, rollerblading, running, golfing, swimming, etc. Click here for more info on Belle Isle.

River Cruises

The cruises on the riverboats can be a great way to enjoy the scenery as well as relax and perhaps eat some food as you do so. Click here for more info on cruises on the river.

Fireworks

The Detroit fireworks are a great display to see during the first part of the summer. Click here for more info on the Detroit Fireworks.

River Restaurants

Find some great restaurants that offer a great dining experience as well as great views of the river. Click here for more info on the Restaurants on the river.

Detroit River Days

River Days is now a popular event for Detroiters to visit every summer. The carnival, food, and tours are a must. Also you must check out the fireworks display on the last day of the festival.

Detroit River Fishing

Fishing on the river is an enjoyable actvity for many all year round. Many people like bass fishing and walleye fishing as well as other types of fish.

Chene Park

A great ampitheater right on the river which features concerts from many top performers. Click here for more info on Chene Park Detroit.
