The Detroit River provides great views and many activities

Belle Isle Conservatory

The Detroit River is a great compliment to the Detroit area and can offer many activities such as boat races, and fishing. Check out pictures and find out events and facts about the river as well. I'm a water person. I just love being around the water. Detroit is unique in its position that it has the river bordering it just to the south (the only place in the US where Canada is SOUTH of the border). You can get an excellent view of the downtown Detroit skyline from Belle Isle or across the river in Canada. In the past Detroit didn't take advantage of the beautiful riverfront it had but now the riverfront is shaping up to be a true gem in the city. First I must say that if you stay in the Detroit Marriott Renaissance hotel, please try to get a riverfront room. The view is spectacular. The river has many places dotted along it that you can check out such as Chene Park and many other things. During the summer, you can also find the annual boat race on the river and boat tours and cruises. Along places like Harbortown you can find marinas and great biking paths. Check out my list below:

The Detroit River Walk

Of course my absolute favorite thing about having the river so close is that I can come by and walk down the Riverwalk. This is one of my favorite things to do in the summer time. You get plenty of time to reflect and think about things and you've got a great view while you're doing it. They are currently extending the riverwalk even further so it will be a great addition to the city of Detroit. Click here for more info on the Detroit River Walk.

Belle Isle Detroit

Belle Isle sits right in the middle of the river. I mean how many people can say that their city has a beautiful island that they can go to at anytime right in their city?? Not very many ;). There is a lot to do on this little island. Fishing, biking, rollerblading, running, golfing, swimming, etc. including the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Belle Isle Nature Zoo Click here for more info on Belle Isle.
