The Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle

The Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle in Detroit was one of my favorite places to visit as a kid. I still enjoy taking periodic visits to the maritime museum as I am older.

The Dossin Museum is another great place to bring the kids for some interesting insight on the maritime history of the Detroit and the Great Lakes. it's also just one of the many great places to go on Belle Isle.

As a kid, I enjoyed the many ship replica exhibits, which showed the many great ships that once passed through the straits of the Detroit River. I would have to say my favorite part of the whole Dossin museum was the pilot house from the SS William Clay Ford. You could walk in and steer the big wheel, while looking out over the Detroit River and see the ships and Detroit river cruises pass by.

You can also love the video presentations that are played often in which you can find out so much about the history of the maritime history of the Great Lakes as well as background history on Detroit's rowing, boat, and yacht clubs. The best thing about the museum is that they recently renovated it in 2007 and they added even more exhibits for you to check out. The museum is only open in the weekends from 11AM - 4PM so hopefully you have 30 minutes or so to spare to visit and enjoy the museum.
