Greektown Detroit....a lively entertainment venue in Detroit

Greektown DetroitGreektown Detroit is on my list of top three places to go if you're visiting the city. It's a top three place to go even if you're a resident of the city as many people i know and myself as well go very often.

The Greektown area is right in the heart of the downtown area and is filled with restaurants, shops (check out downtown Detroit coming from eating a delicous desert at Astoria Pastry Shop for great deserts), and even a casino if you're the gambling type.

Also the Atheneum Hotel Detroit is located here (one of Detroit's most popular hotels to stay in)

On those warm summer nights on the weekend, you can find many people walking the streets of Greektown enjoying the music and even artists that line the streets waiting to draw a quick portrait of you.

Be advised though on the weekends that it gets VERY crowded in terms of driving through the district, so especially during the summer when it's warm, I would recommend you park somewhere nearby and then walk to your destination. Even during the winter, walking is advisable although you better make it quick!!

Restaurants

As I said above there are many restaurants in Greektown. Of course you will find many Greek restaurants. I don't think you can try them all in one day so depending on your stay in town, go to at least one, seeing as there are many other great restaurants in Detroit for you to check out. Restaurants to check out:

  • Fishbone's
  • Laikon
  • New Parthenon
  • Pegasus Taverna
  • New Hellas Cafe
  • The Blue Nile

Casino

If you're the gambling type, Greektown Casino is right in the middle of the district as well. It's one of the three casinos in the city, and it's the one closest to downtown so it's in close proximity to everything. They are currently expanding the casino and adding a 30 story, 400 room hotel to the complex so in 2008 when it's completed, you will have another great hotel to stay in when you visit. I don't gamble but if you want to try your hand in the casino it's another activity for you to add to your list.
