Last year I visited the Detroit Jazzfest in Septmber 2010. This is one festival if you are a jazz enthusiast that you don't want to miss. There are about 3 different jazz festivals stages going on at one time. This is how it works. You walk from one stage to another and listen for free to the type of jazz you like.
The seating is great on huge cement stairs. But I recommend that you bring either a cushion or a seat. Many people had their own seats.
What is really cool is that the way the stages are set up, you can see what is going on. You also get a nice breeze from the river. If you get tired you can always walk around and get some food from vendors. If you're into people watching, this is definitely the place to be.
The other thing I liked is that as we walked to the festival from downtown there were several street vendors selling African memorabalia from scarves, skirts, dashikis, incense and more. We really had a good time. After the festival we got a beautiful meal of fresh fried seafood at the Detroit Fish House Restaurant. Oh was that good.
Also, for those who think Detroit isn't safe. Well I actually found I felt safe and we were walking around at dark. The downtown section of Detroit has really changed. There are so many projects going on to develop the Detroit's creative community.
I'm so in love with the social life there and its people. By contrast the town I'm from on the West coast is not as "inclusive" as Detroit is now.
Thank you for such a beautiful site. I was looking into SBI for a possiblity to do something about the Detroit Sports teams and found your website. Keep going. Don't give up on this site. It is one of the best ones I've seen about travel. Your passion and hard work shows.
Thank you for giving me an opportunity to respond.
